The NBA season is a long, grueling one. With most games ending around 10 p.m. each night and press conferences and meals promptly following, many players are unable to get essential shut-eye until around 3 in the morning! For the players, it is very important to find time to get an adequate amount of sleep so they will be able to perform at their best. 82 games and 30 different cities to compete in with only a few days between each game makes it increasingly difficult for a player to get the recommended 8 hours of sleep each night. So what have NBA players done to ensure they get enough sleep? They nap!
Napping is widely seen as an act of slothfulness. And, with sports, it has long been of popular opinion that rigorous training meant that an athlete would more than likely be depriving its body of the necessary amount of sleep needed. However, Dr. Charles Czeisler, director of Division of Sleep Medicine at Harvard Medical School and Chief of the Sleep Medicine Division at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston, has a different opinion. He insists that NBA players actually need more sleep than the average person, approximately 9 hours of sleep a day. Czeisler explains that players who slept for 9 hours reacted quicker on the court and also remembered plays better.
Many teams around the league have worked alongside Czeisler to better inform NBA players, especially rookies, about the importance of sleep and implementing a nap into their daily routines. Many players who nap have established routines they go through before and after each nap. The routines help their bodies ease into their afternoon siestas. Player’s naps vary in length, but are often held in the evenings since that is when the body naturally begins winding down. Many players such as LeBron James, Derrick Rose and Tyson Chandler swear by their naps and judging by their stat sheets, it’s paying off!
Wouldn’t it be great if all of our jobs allowed us a little time to take a break from the day and catch up on some Zzzs? Do you incorporate a nap into your daily routine?[fbcomments]
